A guide for parents

Understanding junior football

Smaller teams, pitches and footballs help children learn the game as they grow. Here’s a quick guide to the FA’s junior formats for the 2026/27 season. “5v5” means five players on each side.

FA junior football formats · 2026/27
Age groupPlayers per sideMatch-length guideBall size
Under 73v36–10 minutes per gameSize 3
Under 8–Under 95v5Up to 40 minutesSize 3
Under 10–Under 117v7Up to 50 minutesSize 3
Under 12–Under 139v9Up to 60 minutesSize 4
Under 14 and older11v1170–90 minutes, depending on ageSize 5

These are the FA’s age-group formats and match-length guidelines, rather than a fixture timetable. Leagues set their playing arrangements within FA rules; your coach will confirm the format and match length for your team. Younger children start with fun activities and training before organised matches.
