About the team

Football. Friendship.
Fitness. Fun.

Bolton Town FC was founded in 28 September 2025, with WanderHERS forming the following November. A group of mums and women with a keen interest in football has grown into a fantastic team of former youth and adult players, women returning to football and those simply wanting to give it a go.

Since forming, the squad has grown both in numbers and confidence. Playing in the local walking football league gives the team the opportunity to develop their football, compete and, most importantly, enjoy the game together.

But WanderHERS is about more than just football. We encourage, support and look out for each other both on and off the pitch. There’s plenty of laughter, friendship and a little healthy competitiveness along the way!

You don’t have to be the fastest, fittest or most experienced. You just need to turn up, give it a go and be part of the team.

A game for everyone

What is walking football?

Women’s walking football is a slower-paced version of football where running is replaced by walking, making the game more accessible and enjoyable for women of different ages and abilities.

It helps you stay active, build strength, balance and coordination, and supports confidence and mental wellbeing. Just as importantly, it is a chance to meet people, make friends and enjoy football in a relaxed, social environment.

Supporting each other, on and off the pitch.

Getting started

Walking football basics.

  • Walk, don’t run. At least one foot must stay in contact with the ground at all times.
  • No physical contact. No pushing, shoulder charges or contact challenges.
  • Keep the ball below the agreed height limit. Your session or competition will specify the limit.
  • No heading or slide tackles. Stay on your feet when playing the ball.
  • Small-sided games. Usually 5, 6 or 7 players per team on a smaller pitch.
  • Free kicks are indirect. Opponents must stay at least 3 metres away.

Don’t worry about learning every rule before your first session. The team will explain everything and help you get started. Frannie can explain the rules used in the team’s sessions and competitions.
